The Doncaster Wheelers Road Race 10th. June 2012
Sponsored by: Don Valley Cycles, Nordest Restaurent/Bar, Parkinsons Dental Outfitters
EFGH event (7 laps) 38 miles. Weather bright and mainly sunny but a light southerly drift of a breeze.
Thanks again to organiser Phil Henson and his team, after a week of cold wet conditions it was good to feel the sun again, the event was up to the usual LVRC high standard, well organised and very well marshalled. Philip had also gone an extra mile today as there were roadworks on the main road up to the top turn at Scrooby. He had arranged for the local council to get two workers to manually operate a traffic marshalling system to override the temporary traffic lights on the approach of each lead car. This worked magnificently. Well done Phil!
Mike Allen and I, as usual driving up to the 2nd. ride on this super course near Harworth in North Notts. This year were discussing Mick’s super fast 10 in the week, of 20:45 and whether he can hold his good form. I suggested that he changed his normal tactic of an early attack as this week there were riders who would not let him get away so easily as happened last week. It was my cunning plan to get an easier ride for the first two laps. He obviously took note of this as he only once tried a brief attack, with surprisingly me on his wheel, fortunately he realised it was not on and sat up after giving me some real grief.
The race entry was a really class field and so with many strong riders no attacks were allowed any freedom today. It was a real sprinters event. Controlling the race in his usual effective manner was Alan Kemp. Although there were several sorties by opportunists such as Kev Shand who never stops trying, nobody was allowed more than 10 seconds up the road. The race was run off at a really fast pace of over 23mph average. Indeed on the northern leg up to Scrooby we were doing 30+ mph at times. On the final lap the bulk of the field were left to contest the finish, where I start to get twitchy, preferring to leave the jostling for position to the experts. With around 400 metres to go Mick Allen once again led out the sprint closely followed by Alan Kemp, Steve Davies ,Ken Corbett and Allan Ramsay. So the result of the race on the road was 1,AlanKemp, 2 Mick Allen and 3rd. Steve Davies.
In the age related categories, Alan Kemp was 1st. E Mick Allen 1st. F. Ken Haddon 1st. G and evergreen Jack Watson 1st. H.
I must comment from my observation post at the rear of the sprint how skilful the sprinters seem to float through the melee, an art which I haven’t got. I mentioned to Ken Haddon one of my G rivals how he was able to go through, in my humble opinion, non existent gaps; his answer was what gaps!. That about sums it up.
It was great too to see team-mate Jack Watson riding again, How does he do it?
