Absolutely appalling weather - never stopped raining all day and wind got up later in the race so the rain came down heavier. The weather did not stop the aggressive racing which kicked off with a fast attack first time up the deceptively difficult climb at Wolverton by Dave Rutherford of Bush Racing quickly followed by Don Parry, Team Corley Blue, and Martin Hackley Team Jewson.

This attack was pulled back after about 5 miles to be followed by a series of attacks and counter attacks until on the 3rd of 5 laps Don Parry and Chris Gunter of Virgin Active in Milton Keynes opened up a decisive gap on the Wolverton climb and worked hard to develop the break into a race winning move, about 2 .5 minutes clear of the peloton by the end of the 40 miles. The sprint for first was won by Parry from Gunter with Hackley winning the sprint from the peloton for third from Lance Ravenhill.
