The Saighton course near Chester holds little to fear for non climbers, but a blustery morning meant some tough riding with the bunch being lined out on exposed sections. There were good quality fields for all races with the A/B’s and C/D’s both over subscribed, a feature of many vet’s races this year and an indication of the popularity of the sport at the moment.

A fast first lap with some probing attacks, notably the ever aggressive Phil Rose, ultimately came to nothing with the bunch back in one piece as they passed the finish. However on the second lap an attack on the cross wind section on the back of the course saw some four riders edge clear, joined by one’s and two’s jumping across until finally there was a group of about a dozen riders with a few hundred metres gap. It is unusual for a group of this size to be fully committed but on this occasion everybody seemed happy to graft, maybe they realised in form Keith Jones and Graham Payne among others had become stranded in the bunch, but whatever the reason Andy Donaldson said it was “one of the most cohesive breaks he had ever been in”. Anyhow, as soon as they started working staying away was never in doubt and in fact they caught and passed the A/B’s race with two laps to go.

Martin Russell, D cat and who rode strongly in the Abberleys, timed an attack perfectly on a small rise with about two miles to go, and just held off a charging group on the line to take a fine win with Rob Pye winning the C’s.
