01/08/2011 - SOUTHEND WHS OVER THE HILL CRITS REPORT
LVRC ‘OVER THE HILL’ CRITERIUMS PLUS
The Southend Wheelers ‘Over the Hill’ Criteriums Plus held at the Redbridge Cycling Centre on Sunday 31 July 2011 attracted fifty two riders in two age related races.
The race for Categories ABC&D (40-59yrs) had thirty three on the start line and was held over one hour on the lower circuit plus three laps of the full circuit with the finish at the top of the hill.
During the first forty five minutes of the race there were many attempts by small groups to break clear but all were pulled back. With fifteen minutes left of the one hour race David Farrow (Eagle R.C.) and Dave Dickie (Finchley R.T.) broke clear and gained a substantial lead. On the start of the final three laps on the full circuit David Farrow sprinted clear of Dave Dickie on the first time up the hill and continued on his own creating a lead of twenty seconds on reaching the finish line. Trevor Whittock (Lee Valley) won the bunch sprint to take third place.
Nineteen riders started the race for categories EFGH (60yrs+) which was also held over one hour on the lower circuit plus only one lap of the full circuit with the finish at the top of the hill. Half way through the race six ‘E’ Category riders broke clear and soon gained one minute on the remainder of the field. When they started the final lap on the full circuit the group had been reduced to four but they had a lead of one and a half minutes.
Martin Hackley (Team Jewson) won the finishing sprint but was relegated to fourth place as he had taken more than the permitted one lap out for a puncture. Second over the line Terry Devine (Ciclos Uno) was therefore awarded first place with Ray Palin (Mark Pickford/Eye Level) second and Dave Brown (C.C.Luton) in third place.
