E, F, G cat race
A review of the race start sheet looked like it was going to be another Alan Kemp benefit and this anticipation was prevalent right up to the start, when it was reported that Alan had to report for work duty, much to the disappointment of all the riders!!
The race started in unseasonal cold windy weather more akin to March that June which was only 3 days away, most riders opting for arm warmers, even leg warmers were in evidence. As the riders set of on the first of 3.8 laps of the testing Bobbington circuit. It was explained that the start up the main climb was in theory neutralised to the top of the hill but in reality had many gasping for oxygen as the bunch split. The neutralised sections seem to be getting faster than the race nowadays.
However following the neutralised section and a chance to recover Tony Taylor,Team Jewson and Dave Rutherford, Solihull, sped away in perfect 2-up time trialling fashion never to be seen again by the rest of the field, Lance Ravenhill,Team Coventry Cycle Centre gave a valiant chase alone but was eventually back with the bunch after about 2 miles of chasing. Throughout the race many breakaways were being dispatched from the main bunch but not creating any positive gap however new boy John Clark, Wyre Forest slipped away with about 15miles to go unnoticed by many, followed later (approx. 10 miles to go) by Ravenhill who eventual got together with Clark. On the long slope to the finish Rutherford outsprinted local rider Taylor followed approx 1min 30 secs later by Ravenhill and Clark and then the bunch followed approx 1 min later led in by Martin Hackley,Team Jewson.
