 Race report EFG

 Following a week of sunshine and  temperatures in the 20’s the weather decided to change for the event and as the riders were getting changed, the temperature dropped and heavy rain commenced only to stop at the end of the racing.

A quality field assembled for the event and as soon as the race was de-neutralised race favourite Mike Allen sped away with 3 other riders however the group was pulled back within 5 miles. Following this many breakaways were forming and coming back until a dangerous group of six, Allen, Dave Rutherford, Gordon Smith, Martin Hackley ,Bob Richards and Lance Ravenhill started to pull away however this surprisingly was not allowed to go. The cold was starting to effect several riders the most  notable being  Lance Ravenhill  who sought the warmth of the changing rooms.  Throughout the race the main  animator was Mike Allen but he was not being allowed any leeway by the observant bunch.  On the last lap of the race the aggressive Chris Gunter must have put in about 8-10 trade mark hard attacks, only to be countered by either Allen, Rutherford  or Hackley.   With 2 miles to go Allen unfortunately punctured and again  Gunter-Virgin Active put in a blistering attack taking Hackley with him and briefly it looked like these two  could make the finish together, however they were caught with 1 km to go and it was all together again for the bunch sprint up the finishing  hill which was taken by Hackley -Team Jewson-MI Racing followed by Gordon Smith,New Brighton and the evergreen G cat  Ken Haddon,Bush Healthcare.

 Despite the riders looking like they had finished Paris Roubaix the race organisation was excellent and well marshalled.
