26/07/2010 - STEVE JOHNSON's VIEW OF CD SOLIHULL RACE
Location : Stratford upon Avon
Results :
Congratulations to Ivor Thomas and the Solihull members for putting on a great days racing, with the weather also playing it’s part, not too hot, not too cold and with no more than a light breeze drifting across the course. As in all categories there was a good quality field for the C’s, D’s race and the profile of the course was always going to ensure worthy winners. The first lap was a jittery affair with numerous short lived forays off the front keeping the pace moving along briskly, with the finishing climb being taken at a pace which spread the bunch out and led to the first serious attack of the race, a fierce effort by Chris Davies which resulted in a single line of riders strung out along the road. As Phil Liggett is wont to say, “You can tell it’s hurting just look at that line”!! Chris was obviously a marked man and as the bunch reformed to take a collective breath Keith Jones timed his counter attack perfectly taking the evergreen Joey Williams with him. As they approached Snitterfield ‘c’ rider Steve Johnson and another ‘d’ rider who I apologise for not recognising saw the danger, and riding hard through the village managed to make contact with Jones and Williams before the main hill at the back of the circuit. With two c’s and 2 d’s working well together it looked likely that the breakaways would stay clear until the finish, however the speed and course would take it’s toll with ‘d’ rider?? losing contact fourth time up the climb as Jones pushed the pace. Johnson also looked to be in trouble over the top but clawed his way back and paradoxically it was Williams who lost ground after another big effort by Jones the next time up and he was unable to remake contact. The gap to the bunch was never comfortable enough for the breakaways to relax however and Jones and Johnson the remaining two riders continued to work steadily until the last time up the hill, Johnson leading the duo until the climb ramped up in the last 50 metres where Jones put in his decisive attack. This time there was no comeback and Jones continued for a well deserved solo win. Johnson following for 2nd ‘c’, but despair for Williams who had ridden on his own for almost two laps before being caught just before the line by Dave Cuming who claimed the ‘d’ event.

25/07/2010 - ALAN KEMP's and DERRICK WOODINGS' VIEWSOF THE EFG SOLIHULL RR
Location : STRATFORD UPON AVON
Results :
The EFG Solihull CC race was 5 x 8 mile laps of an undulating circuit based on Bearley near Stratford on Avon. The course had 2 distinct drags. One about a mile long with the finish line at the top and the other around the back of the circuit and which although shorter was a bit harder. Les West said they were not hills but they were to me! Luckily the race was neutralised to the top of the 1st drag and the 1st lap was steady enough as we got used to the cicuit and warmed up. At the end of the 1st lap I found Don Parry`s wheel as we climbed the drag to the finish and right on cue about 500 meters from the top he put in a very vicious effort all the way over the top which took Don ,myself and Les West clear of the bunch. The bunch were in no mood to let us go yet and despite our best efforts they caught us at the left turn in Snitterfield Village after perhaps a couple of miles. . At least we were warmed up now and as we started the long drag at Wolverton a few minutes later, I jumped hard, obviously having forgotten already how long this hill was. Again , Don was there and Les too, so the original break was re established as we worked really hard to get out of sight of the bunch although we just dangled just a short way in front for a while. We worked well together with short hard turns on the front for a couple of laps then changing to longer steady turns. Les captained the break and a time check from the roadside saying we were 2 minutes up with a lap to go meant we could relax a bit, as Les gave constant updates on the state of his legs.Don and I were sympathetic but remained vigilant just in case. On the climb to the finish I was ready for an attack fom the other 2 and on the 2nd step on the climb Don moved over from the front as I took over and very slightly increased the pace. 500 meters to go and it gets a bit steeper as we all looked for the 200 to go yellow flag in the distance.I led, hugging the left curb and constantly looking over my right shoulder with Don on my wheel , each of us ready to commit for the final dash for the line. At 200 to go I gave it everything for the finish with Don alongside me at first before I pulled slightly in front at the line with Les just behind Don . Excellent organisation today by Ivor Thomas and his team and also great to see Dave Elliot back in the bunch riding his first race since his nasty crash last year. 1st A Kemp E , 2nd D Parry E, 3rd LWest F , 4th M Hackley E, 5th G Smith E 6th L Ravenhill F, 7th D Woods E Alan Kemp I went to the event for an easy race so that I wouldn't compromise my efforts at the European track champs this week. I was pleased when the 3 musketeers went away as I could then relax and have a relatively easy race. There were one or two riders eager to chase, team mate Martin Hackley, Barry Jones and fellow G rider Ralph Walker to name a few. I considered that if the bunch wanted them back then there should have been more contributing to the chase. I was only interested in my final position in my class this time being rather selfish, and having spoken to my fellow trackie Lance Ravenhill we both held back somewhat. I only put in some efforts on the last lap just to test the legs, to no avail and the result was a bunch sprint which was won by Martin Hackley. I just maintained my position in the G class by finishing behind team captain Mick Ives but holding off Dave Elliot. Derrick Woodings

06/07/2010 - VIC SUTTON MEMORIAL RR REPORT AND RESULTS
Location : YORKSHIRE WOLDS
Results :
| Vic Sutton was known for his climbing prowess proven in the 1959 Tour de France and organiser Dean Fulstow honoured his memory on the day that the first stage of the Tour starts with a climbers course of his own. On this 10 mile circuit which climbs for four miles, steeply at first, out of the village of Warter in the heart of the Yorkshire Wolds. A strong following wind up the climb meant that anyone distanced on it would have a tough job recovering lost ground facing the wind on the descent. Consequently it was a day for the strong men. It was good to see the mass of colours at the start in the sunshine, 108 in all, the best entry ever. Most were prepared to maintain the group status in the first lap. Alan Kemp in the over 60's had other ideas and only Mick Holmes was able to go with him. Allan Ramsay saw the danger and had to make a big effort to get up, and an even bigger effort was made by Rob Stones to create a formidable breakway. Brian Sunter was caught out this time, tired perhaps from his distance time trialling efforts on the Saturday, perhaps he’s reached the age when back to back racing gets too difficult. The other groups kept splitting and splitting, a difficult job for supporting vehicles to cover. All bets were off with Darren Otter in the over 40's lead, he opened up quite a gap on his own around the back road on the last lap but the climbers reduced that a bit by the finish. Andy Donaldson showed his class at the finish of the over 50's race but perhaps the best ride of the day was by over 70 Ralph Walker coming home with the Brian Sunter group. The finish times tell the whole story. Shirley Sutton presented the prizes to the first four finishers in each group with a commemorative plaque that she awarded to each of the winners. 28/06/2010 - BARTON WHS MIDSUMMER RR RACE REPORTS

BARTON UPON HUMBER MIDSUMMER RR SATURDAY 26 TH JUNE 2010 THE DEEPDALE CIRCUIT A bird’s eye view of the E, F & G race from the saddle of Phil Etches. It’s the hottest day the year, time 1400hr and we are waiting for the off. Good - it’s a slow start, the banter is still flowing and no one wants to take the race on just yet, but that will change. The first hill sees a slight injection of pace from me with Brian Sunter also stretching his legs but with no real menace. The bunch is all together up the finish hill and along the flat section approaching the steeper of the two hills on the circuit. I know this holiday ride cannot last so I hit the hill very hard to see who is willing to kick start the race. The answer is Brian “the steam engine” Sunter who powers past on the flat section having just crested the hill. I see the danger of letting him go and make a big effort to jump on to his wheel, but in the same moment Ken Cowdell and Rob Stones jump on my wheel and a gap is created. The gap is only 50 metres and the bunch is lining out on the flat section which becomes a slight down gradient and this will not help the four man break to stay away. Brian has other ideas and drags the three of us along until we start contributing to the break with a smooth bit and bit effort. We complete two laps like this, but I am on the rivet and I think Rob and Ken are too, but the only F in the break Brian is really hurting our legs. At this point Good old Rob suggests we switch to TTT Mode which gives each man a longer rest but a longer pull at the front. This works a treat and we never look back, our lead goes out to five minutes by the finish and the FINISH is what we are all thinking about. As an F cat Brian is laughing and to his credit he takes us “the 3 E’s” to the final hill at pace which sets it up for a clean sprint. The sprint is just about to kick off, I have Brian’s wheel, Ken has mine with Rob close behind. Ken makes the first move - I jump to his wheel - I hold it - I sense him fade and I give one last kick and get round him to win by a bike length. Result Phil Etches 1 st,Ken Cowdell 2 nd, Rob Stones 3 rd in the E cat and Brian Sunter 1 st in the F cat. That’s another good day at the office!!!!! G perspective from DERRICK WOODINGS Once again a superb race promoted by John Gadie on a circuit I had never experienced before, my clubmate and friend Bill Cotton said the circuit would suit me and he was right. It is tough but not super hard, especially with the wind in the south west as it was today. The first lap was fairly easy and I used it as a learning process to find the 'attacking points' in the race. The circuit is roughly an isosolese triangle with the start just south of the apex. This leg was into a stiff breeze, then a left turn along the base with a cross wind, This was where I predicted the breaks would go! At the start of the climb up to the crosswind section Brian Sunter attacked hard taking Phil Etches and Ken Cowdell plus two others with him, a gap appeared in the line and that was it these five driven by Brian just pulled away. John Downing and myself made an abortive effort to close down the group,to no avail and away they went. Out of the last 4 races I have ridden I have got in 2 breaks that did not succeed and have missed 2 that did. That must tell me something. Any weay back to the action in the bunch, it was now a steady ride to the finish with all the big hitters away so no chance of pulling them back. I resigned myself to several 3 minute efforts to try and reproduce the pain I will undergo next weekend on the track. I decided to leave my major effort to the last lap and attacked on the crosswind section with two miles to go gradually pulling clear despite Pete Ryalls efforts finally finishing well clear of the group to win the G cat. prize. One small criticsm of the judgeing here They somehow failed to notice me going over the line solo 200 metres clear of the group. However I will not complain further as I realise placing riders in a group is extremely difficult and they must have been concentrating on that.

This event was something of an experiment being a day-time mid-week event to gauge the level of interest amongst competitors for non weekend races and more importantly to raise funds for the Prostate Cancer Research Charity. Fund raising was a matter of pooling the proceeds (at just over £300) from the rider’s entry fees instead of presenting cash prizes. Category winner’s prizes were kindly donated by Specialized UK, and several local bike shops including Corridori, Cycles Dauphin, CycleWorks, Mosquito Bikes and Quest. A prize for the most aggressive rider was provided by NicoSport. All the prize winners went home very happy with the generosity of these contributions. The course at Kirdford was flat with a gentle downhill finish made possible by the use of Regions 9/10 transponder equipment – the finish line judges were able to sunbathe whilst riders sprinted over the line with the computer recording finishing positions to a thousandth of a second. 56 Entrants from as far afield as Essex, Kent and Wiltshire braved the M25 in rush hour A/B/C race (50 miles/5 laps) The field of 24 entrants set a brisk pace on this flat course and the highlight of the race was the brave solo breakaway by Don Wiley (A cat) who held the bunch at bay by over a minute for most of the race. At the end of lap 4 with just 10 miles to go Don was joined at the front by club-mate Matt Seaton (A cat) and Martin Hulbert (C cat) with the bunch only 12” back. The 3 leaders then worked well together to extend their lead over the bunch to almost a minute at the line. In the sprint Matt was able to outpace Martin Hulbert with Don Wiley in 3rd now paying for his effors having been solo at the front of the race for so long. Christopher Batch (B cat) notched up his best ever LVRC result by putting 5” into the bunch to finish alone in 4th, with Simon Whiten (A cat) winning the bunch sprint. A special mention must go to Robert Marcus who won the B cat competition and provided VC Godalming & Haslemere with their best ever LVRC result. D/E/F/G race (50 miles/5 laps) A good field of 32 entrants contested the D/E/F/G event run a few minutes behind the A/B/Cs. The race was animated by Dave Woods (E cat) who went on to take the most aggressive rider prize – maybe he wanted to catch up with his wife who was piloting the lead car!! The race was run off at almost the same speed as the A/B/Cs with lap times only 1 minute slower over the 10-mile laps. Willie Hall (E cat) made a solo break at ½ distance, only to be reeled in a few miles further, and then (for him) disaster struck as he was taking an extra long swig from his bottle as he headed into the undergrowth. Fortunately his Colnago was unscathed and he was then seen trailing round after the bunch with Sussex grass verge poking out of his jersey pockets. At the finish there was a furious bunch sprint won by Terry Devine who seems invincible when it comes down to a sprint. Andy Hicks (F cat) and Chris Edwards (D cat) ran him pretty close though, with Mike Allen (E cat) making a worthwhile trip from Belper picking up 4th overall (2nd in the E cats). 22/06/2010 - TOM SIMPSON MEMORIAL REPORT ON EFGH RACE
Location : HAWORTH, NOTTS
Results :
From MI Racing's Derrick Woodings The Tom Simpson memorial road race on Sunday promoted by Ian Davenport of the Dinnington Road Club was again run off in a very professional manner as befits a well organised LVRC event. Harworth Notts, where I remember riding as a pro over 40 years ago is a testing circuit. Over 40 starters in a high class field were flagged off and it resulted in 2 hours (50 miles) of high intensity 'interval training', a national championship in all but name. The constant attacks were instantly brought to heel. Notably Alan Kemp, Les West, Kev Shand, John Leach and fellow G rider Ralph Walker kept trying to force a selection but no-one was allowed any leeway of more than a few seconds. I had started the ball rolling with an initial attack from the gun - purely for training you understand, 5 minutes of high intensity work to get started. On being caught, I opted to sit in for a few laps (a big mistake) as the constant pace changes are always amplified at the back of the race. Each time up the finishing climb it was a question of hanging in there. Every lap saw more riders being shelled out until there remained a core of top riders (around 20) marking each other closely. At the bell with 6 miles to go I attacked and gained a few seconds hoping that one or two would come across to form a group. It was not to be, I was reeled in with 4 miles to go, another attack by Kev Shand was countered by Alan Kemp and Les West, I took the initative and joined in and we gained 100 metres quickly. Hitting the last corner with just 1k to go and only the final climb we were still clear, but a concerted chase brought us back at just 500m, we were swamped, only Alan Kemp was able to raise his pace and hold on to win. The race ended with a fast run in to the finish and a long sprint up the final climb to into Harworth village. This hard fought race saw Alan Kemp emerge victor from Mick Holmes, Phil Etches, Don Parry, Allan Ramsay and Dave Maughan.I finished as usual at the tail end of this group, but highly satisfied with my efforts and present form.

On the tough Bashall Eves circuit the pressure was applied almost immediately by Jack Walker and sustained by a number of other riders with the first split occurring after the long descent at the end of the first lap. The lead group of 10 riders then stayed together until a lap and a half to go when Alan Kemp, Mick Homes and Don Parry forced another split of 3 riders. They stayed together until the final long drag when Kemp and Parry distanced Mick Holmes by about 200 meters. Alan Kemp beat Don Parry in the sprint for first place with Mick Holmes third.
14/06/2010 - DONCASTER WHS RR EFGH REPORT FROM DERRICK WOODINGS
Location : HAWORTH
Results :
Just a note on yesterdays race at Harworth, promoted by Phil Henson. Another well organised event on a super course. The EFGH race that I was competing was as usual started at a hectic pace, instigated by my travelling companion Mike Allen. I should have been more attentive as he had been instructing me in his tactic for the event- to try and distance his nemesis Phil Etches, who has the beating of Mick in the final gallop. Unfortunately I started at the back and after the first 500metres the course turned left onto a wind assisted leg. Mick put the hammer down and the bunch strung out at up to 30mph and splintered. I was like a fish out of water unable to breathe and by the time I had recovered found myself in the rear group, 6 riders going clear. The only rider to get across this initial gap of 200 metres was Terry Devine who put in a brilliant burst of speed to get across. This was then the pattern of the race. Ken Cowdell made a big effort followed by Dave Gretton but couldn't make it. So with some organisation from Ken we formed an organised chase. This went on for 4 laps where we just kept the gap at 30 secs. After that the gap grew inexorably, Realising that we were not going to close I rode more conservatively, saving myself for a big effort on the 7th.(last) lap. Pre-empting me Nigel Whatmough made a big effort at the bell and went clear with around 100-150 metres gap I watched, not prepared to chase down a training partner, I waited patiently for some reaction but none came so after another mile I made a big effort and got across to Nigel alone sat on for a few seconds to recover and the started sharing the pace. My legs were now functioning properly and I was driving hard, Nigel began to suffer and urged me to go on alone which I had no option but to do, fortunately clubmate Bill Cotton had also taken the initiative with another rider(sorry I don't remember his name) they mopped up Nigel and got back up to me. Our group of 4 then really got to work and pulled out a gap on the survivors to stay clear to the finish. We did not catch the break which finished around 1 minute ahead. Mick Allen being beaten by Phil Etches by a tyres width from Paul Griffiths. I was highly satisfied with my performance after missing the break finishing 8th. with 1st G position. I am still using these June races to sharpen up my speed ready for the masters track champs at Newport in July.

23/05/2010 - LVRC HANDICAP CHAMPIONSHIP
Location : WELLAND, WORCS
Results :
| LVRC National Handicap Championship road race 23/5/2010 promoted by VC Sevale Report from Steve Watson The event 61 competitors started the National Handicap championships, which was on the fast and rolling Welland course. Competitors were greeted by clear blue skies and beautiful Worcestershire countryside and temperatures nudging 27°C as they prepared to cover the 3 x 15 mile laps. Setting the handicaps so that the A & B riders have a good chance of getting to the front by the end of the race is always challenging and Mike Amery the organiser stuck to LVRC guidelines which meant the A’s gave away 16 minutes to the G’s over the 49 mile race distance. On paper the D group looked very strong with Brian Davison & Andrew Donaldson looking likely to drive the D group who started some 9 minutes after the G’s. The crucial point in the D group was the fact that all 18 entrants started the race ~ which meant that with 30% of the riders in just one group they were in a very strong position to dominate the race providing they worked together. The race After 15 miles, and at the end of the first lap the D’s were closing fast on the E’s who had started 3 minutes ahead, and the B’s had done well to close up 3 minutes on the front of the race. After 30 miles (2 laps) the pattern of the race had been set with the D’s having mopped up both the E’s & F’s and were just 40” behind the G’s at the head of the race. They were being driven along by Brian Davison & Chris Davis as they crossed the line. It was the biggest group now too despite 9 riders having been spat out of the back. Things were not so rosy for the ABC’s at this stage though, the B’s had done well to catch the C’s (& mop up the DEF stragglers) and had closed up another 3½ minutes on the front of the race but they were still 7½ minutes in arrears; Jon Stephenson and Simon Baynes (both B cat) seemed to be doing most of the work for this group. The A’s had slipped 1 minute back from the B’s by this stage and were still working well with John Barnes and Lorenzo Buratti (both A cat) pushing things along but were unlikely to see the front of the race now, with 11½ minutes deficit remaining and just 15 miles left to cover. With 12 miles to go the junction happened - the D’s caught the front of the race and with 7 miles to go there was a small crash ⅔ the way back in this group meaning 6 riders were then out of contention, leaving just 19 at the front. Chris Davis (D cat) was delayed but caught up with this group soon after – soon after this proved to be significant to his result. With 5 minutes before the race finished, disaster at the finish on Castlemorton Common was just about averted: a herd of cows wanted to cross the road to graze on the other side!! and Graham Coulson was dispatched on his trike to do his John Wayne thing and round them up. At the finish, Brian Davison and Dave Scargill (both D cat) had managed to prise themselves off the front and contested the sprint for the championship, with Brian proving too strong for Dave as he led him over the line with 1” to spare. In the confusion of the last lap crash and the cycle tourists mooching over the common as the race approached, poor Chris Davis (D cat) was sure he had won the race but in fact he had won the bunch sprint for 3rd place, just 7” behind the winner. Special mention must go to Ken Haddon, Pete Ryalls and Jack Watson (all G cat) who were not only still there with competitors 15 years their junior, but were up there for the sprint too. At just over 7 minutes, Nick Yarworth (C cat) won the sprint for the B/C cat group and at almost 12 minutes John Barnes pipped Lorenzo Buratti for the pride of being first A cat rider home. After the race the consensus was that Brian Davison, Dave Scargill and Chris Davis were worthy medallists as they had been the main animators of the D group the whole race and were the reason for the 25mph average recorded. Brian Davison looked pretty chuffed with his national champion’s jersey – this is the first “updated design” champion’s jersey (grahic design by MStina) to be awarded by LVRC, so that makes it pretty special too – well done to him. Mike Amery and his team must be complimented on staging such a great championship and hopefully they will repeat this event. 11/05/2010 - DEREK SMITH MEMORIAL RR REPORT
Location : CLECKHEATON
Results :
The Derek Smith Memorial Road Race - 25 April 201 Organised by the Halifax Imperial Wheelers, this was the first running of the Derek Smith Memorial RR on what was a new course for the club based on Hartshead Moor near Cleckheaton. In the A/B race it was Darren Otter (Rutland CC) who won in what has become his signature fashion, alone and several minutes up on his chasers. The winning move was made with 6 laps to go (of the initial 10). Several riders immediately saw the danger and took chase. It was to no avail, Darren soon gained time and held a group of what was to become 3 chasers at over 2 minutes all the way to the finish. In the sprint for second place Richard Binks (Holme Valley Wheelers) beat the promoting club's Sean Smith (and Derek's son), these two taking first and second place in the Bs respectively. Paul Dixon (VS Cycles) finished fourth to claim second A. Meanwhile John Hadfield (Rutland CC) took off alone in the latter stages of the C/D race. He said afterwards that it was seeing his team-mate Darren's solo efforts that had inspired him. It proved to be a successful strategy as he too held off his chasers - winning the race alone. Again a small group of chasers were sprinting it out for second place with Paul Webster (Dinnington RC) getting the verdict from Chris Miller of the Clayton Velo (who claimed first place in the Ds). Mick Day of Paul Milnes Cycles finished fourth in the race and second D. In the E/F/G race it was the turn of Mick Holmes (Batley CC) to solo to victory with Phil Etches (Witham Wheelers) and Kev Shand (West Pennine) having to settle for second and third respectively. First F was Jeff Hardy and, in what is becoming something of a habit, Jack Watson of MI Racing won the first G prize. Derek Smith's MI Racing team-mates kindly donated a trophy to the race in his honour. The cup was presented to the winner of the E/F/G race - Derek's contemporaries. And so it was fitting that local rider Mick Holmes received the trophy from Derek's widow, Pauline. In response, Mick was able to recall early memories of Derek and was clearly honoured to be the first recipient of the trophy.
10/05/2010 - WYRE FOREST RACE REPORTS
Location : WORCESTERSHIRE

RACE REPORT for AB's In cold tough conditions that saw less than half the field finish, the AB category race was decided by an attack towards the end of the first lap on a testing climb past Witley Court by Ian Treadwell. He was joined by four other riders, Simon Griffiths, Mark WEvill, John Barnes and Simon Baynes. The five riders worked well together, Vince Page and Brian Austin tried to bridge the gap on Woodbury Hill but the group were not hanging about and increased their advantage on the remaining three laps. The five stayed together to contest the up hill finish where Simon Baynes track speed made him a comfortable winner. CD race from Joey Williams A steady start to the C/D race expolded into action at half distace when a group of 5 riders including strong man Marcus Walker and Nick Yarworth went clear. This produced a reaction from the leading contenders in the main field and break was eventually caught with half a lap to go. The pressure was on in the bunch and the split eventually came leading up to the last climb of woodbury hill. Five riders went clear, Marcus Walker,Dave Phillips,Nick Yarworth,Joey Williams, and,Mike Amery. The sprint was taken by Nick Yarworth from Dave Phillps 2nd,Joey Williams 3rd,Marcus Walker 4th and Mike Amery 5th. Race report for age categories E, F and G Race conditions were extremely cold with a strong north easterly wind and this kept the field fairly intact for the early laps. Early skirmishes were initiated by John Buxton (Cycle Bargains) and Bob Richards (Solihull) but the race sparked into life with about 8 miles to go when Gordon Walters (Bush Healthcare) launched one his trademark late attacks and got 20 secs on the bunch who then decided to close the gap. Immediately the gap was closed Lance Ravenhill (Coventry Cycle Centre)counter attacked to get a 200metre gap and Martin Hackley (Team Endura-MI Racing) had to dig deep for a second reaction and cross the gap alone, these two then worked well together and managed to gain 1 min 45secs on the bunch when they crossed the line Ravenhill taking the win from a tired Hackley. The bunch then came in led by Gordon Walters followed by Gordon Smith (New Brighton CC).

Location : DARLEY MOOR, Nr ASHBOURNE, DERBYS

FROM PHIL RAYNER, WELLAND VALLEY Very cold and windy conditions were faced by the riders. Despite quite a low number of pre entered riders, the field was substantially boosted by on the line entrants. There was a staggered start with the D cats set off first then the C s at 15 seconds and so on. D cat Andy Donaldson took advantage of his 'head start' to forge into a solo lead. After two laps the B s caught the C s and D s and finally the A s latched on too. B cat Phil Rayner went after 'the beast' Donaldson and these two joined forces for 5 laps before being joined by a group of around 6 riders. A few hard attacks saw three lose contact leaving a strong group of 5 riders forging well clear. These riders were Donaldson , Rayner , Ian Cooper , Andy Whitehead , and no 6 A cat from the dinnington rc (apologies As I dont have a name as he entered on the line but rode very strongly !!). These 5 worked hard together until the judges finally jumped out and said "3 laps to go". A last lap attack from Rayner was brought back by an attentive Cooper , which just left a sprint for the line with Rayner edging out Cooper and Donaldson for the win. Ian cooper was 1st A cat Phil Rayner !st B cat Keith Middleton 1st C cat Andy 'the beast' Donaldson 1st D cat

REPORT EFG race: Don Parry, Team Corley, attacked from the gun and finally broke the elastic after about 10kms and was joined by Phil Cooper from Milton Keynes the two stayed away together for 55kms and Don Parry won the sprint. They held the bunch at about 1 min for most of the race, but at one point the bunch got back to 20 secs and then they pulled away again near the finish. Terry Devine was third. It was a very hard day - windy, cold - on a tough rolling course.
06/05/2010 - TOUR OF ABBERLEYS RACE REPORT
Location : WORCESTERSHIRE AND SHROPSHIRE
Results :
The Tour of The Abberley`s 3 Day on 1st to 3rd of May 2010 CDEF RACE from ALAN KEMP Stage 1 Time Trial of 3 miles approx. Straight out from bottom of Woodbury Hill , about ½ mile uphill to start followed by a few undulations before a very fast descent to finish just short of Martley . That was soon over and we did far more miles warming up and riding back up the horrible hill to the HQ at Abberley. 1st Andy Donaldson 07.30 2nd Robin Haigh 07.31 3rd Marcus Walker 07.40 About 14 riders finished within 30 seconds of the winner. Stage 2 44 miles increased to 55 at the start, started 2 hours after the TT and was 5 complete laps of the circuit from Woodbury Hill to Martley , left to Castle Hill, then Ockeridge and Martley again. Last lap we went through Martley to finish on the top of Berrow Green Hill about a mile from Martley. The late addition of an extra lap caused a last minute dash to the toilet and extra food in the back pocket for many! I always carry a week’s supply of gels in my pocket in case I get lost or Ewart my team mate gets the knock This stage was dominated by Rob Whitfield in a lone breakaway very early on. Rob is great at this kind of move as are some of his teammates. Graham Payne, a new C rider did a great job of stifling any attempts to bring his teammate back, always pouncing on any attempts. Robin Haigh 2nd in TT and riding his first race of the season and Andy Donaldson were particularly active and aggressive but got little in the way of help. My calculation was that Rob Whitfield was away for about 3 laps keeping a 30 second advantage and then it came down rapidly. I did not have my race head on but was purely trying to survive, but a couple of counter attacks when Rob was caught resulted in about 6 or 7 riders going clear before the final run from Woodbury to Martley. These were Ray Pugh, Ray Palin, Callum Gough, Graham Payne, and Marcus Walker. I am sure I have missed somebody out but the bunch sprint up the hill resulted in us catching some of the break. Callum Gough took the win from Graham Payne and Marcus Walker. Main casualty today was Kev Shand who got a pinch puncture on a pot hole 1st lap and chased bravely on his own for the rest of the day. Stage 2 55 miles 1st Callum Gough 2nd Graham Payne 3rd Marcus Walker Stage 3 40 miles 2 laps of a circuit to Clows Top, Newnham Bridge to pass through Abberley twice before continuing to finish just short of the top the hill at Clows top. On the 1st time after the summit of Clows top and left toward Newnham on a very fast descent I thought I was seeing things when my club mate Ewart Howkins (2 years riding the bike after 30 years with no riding and probably 3 stone heavier than the average rider) shot down the outside of the bunch at an incredible rate, appearing to be sat bolt upright! It was amazing to see several riders heads turn to the right in unison as he went by and revved out of sight. .He told me later that he wished he had got bigger than a 50 tooth big ring on! This was the spark which ignited breakaway specialist Phil Rose who took off the with Gary Hill for company working very well ( to just get a start on the hills). These 2 caught Ewart before the vicious , long prime hill where very generous time bonuses were on offer for the 1st 3.riders over. Phil and Gary shared the bonuses as they stayed away right into Abberley last time and on to the climb to the finish on Clows Top. Poor Ewart slid backwards with others 1st time up the main climb, eventually got back on to go backwards again on 2nd lap. Les Liddiard managed to join the 2 leaders into the 2nd lap Graham Payne and Rob Whitfield did a great team effort as ever and were the perfect team mates trying to defend Phil Rose’s lead. Unfortunately justice was not done, they were caught. In the last mile or 2 a couple of attempts were made to get away for the win but being uphill and a bit of wind I do not think anyone was very confident of holding out off the front. At the start Marcus Walker had told me he sometimes trains on the finish hill and I watched when Marcus moved someway towards the front and on the outside.. The finish came in sight, I did not see a yellow flag so when Marcus committed to fight for the finish that was my cue to go and hope he had not set me off too soon. The finish could not come soon enough and I crossed the line in oxygen debt with Graham Payne 2nd for the second time and Callum Gough I think third. I may have won but this was completely undeserved. But then the last 300 yards of a race is the only bit I like so because I was there I had to at least have a go! Very cruel luck on Nick Giles who on his good form would have fought out the overall but had the bad luck to puncture just after the race started... He chased all race and did not finish far behind. Class ride! 1st Alan Kemp 2nd Graham Payne 3rd Callum Gough Stage 4 55 miles. Circuit based on 6 times up the hill at Berrow Green Hill. Interesting one this as Andy Donaldson led overall with about 14 riders easily within striking distance within about 20 seconds. Andy’s problem was how to control everybody especially as on 5 climbs up Berrow Green hill there were time bonuses of 5, 4,3,2 seconds, double time at the finish. The bonuses registered in my head but were just academic as I just wanted to get the race over. Before the end of 1st lap Rob Whitfield punctured and chased hard all race and Nick Giles had a lead for the time bonuses taking 5 second in front of the chasing bunch. My initial thought was that if anyone gives it everything each lap for the bonuses then they will suffer going for the finish 1st counting climb I went from the bunch for the bonus time. As we went over the deceptive climb which starts steep but almost levels out, Steve Jolly shouted “ keep going” A sharp left down a narrow descent and the break had formed. We worked well together and we caught Nick Giles. The break was Nick Giles, Callum Gough, Steve Jolly, Graham Payne Andy Donaldson and I. Good move to get in this break as 3 of the lads in the break had teammates who would hopefully control things in the bunch. For the 1st time I went into race mode as I had reduced the time gap on Andy.. 44 miles to go. Maximum lead for the break was over 2 minutes . Each sprint for time bonuses was vicious . Could not see who gained bonuses behind me but I knew for certain that Graham Payne, Andy and Callum were also picking up the spoils. Not sure in which order. Last time up to the finish I think all riders in the break new the importance of this final dash for the line with double time bonus’s on offer. We knew it was going to be incredibly close for the overall win .I led out, wound it up and luckily held on. Stage 4 1st Alan Kemp 2nd Graham Payne ( for third time) 3rd Andy Donaldson 4th Callum Gough 5th Steve Jolly 6th Nick Giles ( who after his bad luck moved into midfield position in the overall I know that John French did a storming finish to get away from a chasing group as did Phil Rose and Ray Pugh. Great weekend organized by Stuart Hall and his helpers with sponsorship from Martin Bush Healthcare and Epic Cycles. Final overall 1st Alan Kemp, 2nd Andy Donaldson @ 1 second, 3rd Callum Gough @ 18 secs, 4th Graham Payne @ 24secs, 5th Steve Jolly @ 33 secs, 6th John French @ 1.57 secs, 7th Phil Rose @ 2.03, 8th Marcus Walker @ 2.06, 9th Gary Hill, 10thth Michael Amery.

| MI Racing organised a new event on the LVRC calendar, a 21 miles two up time trial held over the tough course to be used in October for the LVRC National Time Trial Championship. The couse was based at the very popular Napton area of Warwickshire, and used the Southam to Daventry road, including climbs of Shuckbourough and Staverton ,both ways, plus a strong East wind to contend with on the outward leg of the course. Fastest Team was Planet X --40 yr old Ian Cooper and 46 yr old Steve Clayton who recorded 46 mins 46 secs for the 21 ml course. Second fastest--Michael Avery 51 and Sean O,Toole 48 --V.C.Sevale----with 47-26 Third fastest--Les Liddiard--52 and Pete Smith 52 --Team Endura--M.I.Racing--with 49-12 Fourth fastest--Mick Ives--70 and Tony Taylor--64---Team Endura--M.I.Racing--with 49--57---they were also winners of the Age Related event by a massive margin.
